Hybrid FRS / GMRS /GPS Radios

Hybrid Radios

As radio manufactures need to grow their market, they have latched on to the idea of selling their radios for multiple services, in this case, FRS and GMRS. Generally, if a radio you’re looking at in the store or on line has more 15 or more channels, there is a good chance it is a hybrid radio.

So, what the good and bad points of these radios?

Pro:

• More channels means there is a better chance of finding an open frequency in a crowded area
• Using channels in the GMRS range are generally quieter, since there are fewer radios in the market at this time

Cons:

• The radios can be heavier, due to the number of batteries required
• They require a license from the FCC to use the GMRS frequencies

Range of FRS/GPS Radios
